For thousands of high school students aspiring to move on to college, a memorable essay can be the key to acceptance and millions in scholarship.

With this in mind, college and graduate school admissions consultant, and Founder of Memorable Essay, Shawna-Kaye Lester, is hosting essay workshops to help students perfect their applications. It is now the peak of the college application season, and this year’s staging, The College Essay Workshop, will be held on October 27 at The University of the West Indies, Mona. The event was designed to help students overcome the most challenging issues in essay writing so they get into college, and is accessible for an entry fee of just $2,500.

“For the Class of 2022, 75 per cent of my private clients were admitted to their top-choice college, and they won a total of US$ 1.3 million total in scholarships,” Lester said. “Two of those clients were Jamaican—one opted to go to Mercyhurst University, and the other now attends The University of Pennsylvania.”

The College Essay Workshop is for students who are not strong writers or who struggle to express what value they can add to a college community. Because, according to Lester, to secure admission to top schools or win competitive scholarships, students must present themselves as having something exceptional to contribute to campus.

An alumna of Bates College, a selective liberal arts school in the United States, as well as Columbia University, where she completed two master’s degrees on a full scholarship, Lester has personally experienced the success she guides her clients towards.

Additionally, since 2007, Lester has helped over 400 ambitious college and graduate school applicants win over US $6 million in scholarships to top schools around the world. Over 300 of those clients have gotten into college, including Harvard University, Princeton University, Cornell University, Columbia University, The University of Chicago, Amherst College, and MIT.

"Eleven years ago when I started on this path, I realized that my peers consistently sought my help with writing, in general, and with applications, in particular,” Lester says. “However, I had an Aha! moment when I met a student applying to my college, Bates. His application essay was a mess, but he was a phenomenal candidate. I worked with him until his application showcased why he should be admitted, and he got in. That experience propelled me into this field.” she continued.

Lester wants Jamaican students to take advantage of The College Essay Workshop so they can be competitive on an international stage.

“There is money to be won, but you have to know how to advocate for yourself in writing,” Lester explains. “Going to a college where you thrive can radically improve your life trajectory. I want students to come out to this workshop so they have expert, step-by-step support to get into world-class schools. Jamaica can only be better off for it.”
