Shaw spotlights plan for AMC complex at Denbigh Show
The annual Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show got under way in rollicking style on Saturday with intense participation and excitement on the celebrated Clarendon property.
With Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Audley Shaw and his colleague minister, JC Hutchinson sharing the spotlight for the day, backed by the top brass of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), and Opposition Spokesman, Dr Fenton Ferguson, and a top-level team from the Cayman Islands' Agricultural Society in attendance, Shaw used the occasion to declare some of his major agenda items for the agricultural sector.
After emphatically stating that the "time for fooling around with agriculture is over", Shaw said areas like product development and irrigation need serious attention and resources, and these needs would be tackled frontally.
He also said young people need to be brought more significantly into agriculture and it will take innovation and creativity to attract and inspire their involvement.
Along that vein, Shaw said he intends to spearhead the transformation of the Agricultural Marketing Corporation (AMC) export complex on Spanish Town Road in Kingston into a modern complex to much better serve the sector.
He said with drive and determination, much greater returns can be derived from agricultural endeavours both as individuals and as a country.
