Senior citizens numbered among 6 accused in multi-million ganja bust

The police, in an operation in Ocho Rios, St Ann on Wednesday, seized marijuana with an estimated street value of $4.5 million.

Six men, four of whom are over 50 and two over 60, were arrested in connection with the find.

Charged with possession of ganja, dealing in ganja and taking preparatory steps to export ganja are 53-year-old Rueben Simpson, a businessman; 60-year-old Maxfield Mignott; 44-year-old Desmond Gordon, a taxi operator; 63-year-old farmer Desmond Gordon; 31-year-old Ricardo West; and 56-year-old Stanley Morris, a taxi operator, all of a St Ann address.

Reports are that about 4 pm, lawmen were on operation in the Exchange area of Ocho Rios, when they saw the men removing the illicit drug from a premises.

They were subsequently arrested.

The drug weighed 1,113.46 pounds, and has an estimated street value of $4.5 million.

The accused are scheduled to appear in court on Friday, November 22.
