Section of Papine Market destroyed by fire

Fire of unknown origin destroyed a section of the Papine Market in St Andrew on Thursday.

Reports are that about 1:41 a.m., persons driving pass the area saw smoke coming from the building and went to check. It was found that the facility was on fire.

Firefighters were called to the location and after about half an hour, the blaze was extinguished.

Firefighters said approximately 38 per cent of the market was destroyed.

A section of the roof collapsed as a result of the blaze.

A team of firefighters is still on the location carrying out further operation.

The estimated monetary value of the damage has not yet been determined.
