Sagicor Foundation donates $100,000 to May Pen Unit for the Deaf

Sagicor Foundation team members and volunteers visited the May Pen Unit for the Deaf to make a donation of $100,000 towards the school’s nutrition programme.

For the 2017/2018 academic year, the institution faced severe challenges to provide sufficient lunches for their students, resulting in lunch being only offered three days of the week.

Porsha Byfield, principal, May Pen Unit for the Deaf shared, “We had to go from serving lunches five days weekly to three days weekly.  In an effort to improve this, we wrote to several business sectors seeking assistance. We had almost given up hope of ever receiving any support when we received a call from Sagicor Foundation that they will be making a donation towards our lunch programme.”

The well-needed funds will go towards the development of the school’s nutrition programme set to be rolled out at the start of the new school year in September 2018.

“It is important that students at all levels have access to proper nutrition, as it goes a long way in guaranteeing strong academic performance. Sagicor Foundation is proud to assist May Pen Unit for the Deaf with the development of their nutrition programme as we recognise that children are the future of our nation and our best investment,” stated Simone Walker, Executive Director, Sagicor Foundation.

The school’s dance troupe showed their appreciation for the donation by performing a dance routine for members of the Sagicor Foundation team.
