Local tourism officials welcomed the inaugural direct flight by Nordwind Airlines Airbus 322 from Moscow, Russia at the Sangster International Airport (SIA) on Friday.

The Nordwind Airlines Airbus 322, operated by Pegas Touristik, arrived with 330 passengers and 17 crew members.

The flight was met by a delegation led by Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett.

Head of the consular section at the Russian Embassy in Kingston, Alexsei Sazonov, represented Russian Ambassador to Jamaica, Vladimir Nikolaevich Vinokurov.

Also in attendance to greet the passengers and crew were Jamaica’s Director of Tourism, Donovan White; Regional Director of Tourism, Odette Dyer; Delano Seiveright of the Tourism Ministry; Montego Bay Mayor, Homer Davis; Jamaica Hotels and Tourism Association (JHTA) President, Omar Robinson; Joy Roberts and Geraldine Wright of Jamaica Vacations; and Raphael Echevarne, CEO of MBJ Airports, operators of the SIA, among other officials.

An elated Bartlett said with the coming of the Russians, he is excited about Jamaica becoming a multi-destination hub.

"We are excited about Jamaica becoming a hub for that, where you can bring the passengers here and then we move them to the other places that are close by; to Cuba, to Dom Rep and elsewhere, or a little bit of the reverse... we won't mind either... if you land them in the Dom Rep and they can come to Jamaica. As long as they are coming into Jamaica, because we want them here," Bartlett quipped.

Charter flight N4 1005 is slated to arrive at 6:15 a.m. every 10 days on Tuesdays and Fridays through to April 2019, with the return flight N4 1006 to Moscow departing at 8:15 a.m. on the same days.
