RSPL: Portmore heap more misery on relegation-threatened Sandals

Portmore United returned to winning ways on Match Day 24 of the 2017-2018 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) with a 3-1 victory over Sandals South Coast at Spanish Town Prison Oval on Sunday.

The victory came seven days after the Premier League leaders suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Cavalier, their second loss in three games after they had raked up six straight victories.

On Sunday, Saneekie Burton (9th minute), Venton Evans (11th minute) and Roberto Johnson (62nd minute) scored the goals for Portmore United, which were missing some of their top players.

Delroy Davis pulled back a goal for Sandals South Coast in the 65th minute.

With the victory, Portmore United moved to 50 points from 24 matches to open up a six-point lead over second-place and defending champions Arnett Gardens, which were not in action because of their participation in the Caribbean Club Championship in Trinidad and Tobago.

Sandals South Coast (16 points) sink deeper in the relegation zone with bottom-place Boys' Town (14 points), which also lost on the day, beaten 3-0 by Montego United at the Barbican Complex.

Dino Williams  led Montego Bay United with a double strike, while Johann Weatherly scored the other goals.

Williams opened the scoring in the 65th minute and secured his double in the 76th minute to put Montego United 2-0 up, while Weatherly completed the scoring a minute into time added on.

It was a good victory for Montego United, which were held to a 2-2 draw by visitors Waterhouse in a rescheduled game on Thursday. Despite the victory, Montego Bay United (27 points) remain in 10th place, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

Ninth-place Harbour View, which will host Cavalier in the Monday Night game, are also on 27 points with Montego United.

Meanwhile, Humble Lion climbed a place to eighth following an away 1-0 victory against the University of the West Indies (UWI) FC at the UWI Bowl, Mona.

Craig Foster scored the lone goal in the 63rd minute.
