RSPL: Harbour View stun Portmore; Humble Lion deny Tivoli
Former champions Harbour View stunned league leaders Portmore United 2-1, while Tivoli Gardens missed a chance to improve to second place on Match Day 21 of the 2017-2018 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) on Sunday.
Entering the day just five points above the relegation zone, Harbour View came from a goal down at the Harbour View Stadium to secure an unlikely victory, seven days after they could only manage a 1-1 draw against bottom-place Boys' Town.
Andrew Allen handed Harbour View the victory, four minutes from time when he scored from the penalty spot. Earlier, Maalique Foster put Portmore United 1-0 ahead in the 41st minute, but that lead was cancelled by Christopher Harvey in the 71st minute.
The defeat was the first for Portmore United since November 5 when they lost 3-0 against Reno, also an away match.
As a result of the victory, Harbour View climbed two spots to seventh on 24 points, eight clear of the relegation zone.
Portmore United remain on 44 points, giving defending champions and second-place Arnett Gardens a chance to reduce their seven-point lead.
Arnett Gardens will take the field in the Monday night fixture against Reno at the Anthony Spaulding Complex.
Meanwhile, third-place Tivoli Gardens suffered a 1-0 defeat against Humble Lion at the Effortville Community Centre.
Andrew Vanzie scored the only goal of the match in the 55th minute, denying Tivoli Gardens a chance to move ahead of Arnett Gardens for at least 24 hours.
Tivoli Gardens remain on 36 points, but fourth-place Cavalier moved within two points following a 4-1 home victory over Boys Town at the Stadium East field.
Javaughn Mitchell scored in the 22nd minute to put Boys' Town 1-0 ahead, but Cavalier hit back with four unanswered goals to pull off a comfortable victory.
Nicholas Hamilton (56th minute), Kaheem Parris (65th minute), Alex Marshall (74th minute) and Paul Wilson (93rd minute) scored for promoted team Cavalier.
Over at the Mona Bowl, the University of the West Indies (UWI) FC defeated promoted team Sandals South Coast 3-1 to remain in fifth place.
Oshane Jenkins (11th minute), Andre Bernal (62nd minute) and Patrick Brown (93rd minute) were on target for UWI FC; while Ron Daley (19th minute) scored for Sandals South Coast, which remain in the relegation zone with Boys' Town.
The day's other match between Montego Bay United and Waterhouse at Wespow Park was postponed because of a waterlogged field.
