RSPL: Arnett Gardens maintain 2-point lead; Sandals secure first win

Reigning champions Arnett Gardens maintained their two-point lead atop the 2017-2018 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) following Sunday's round of games on Match Day 9.

The two-point lead remained intact after Arnett Gardens and hosts Portmore United battled to a goalless draw in their top-of-the-table fixture at Prison Oval in Spanish Town.

As a result of the draw, Arnett Gardens moved to 19 points, while second-placed Portmore United improved 17.

Meanwhile, third-placed the University of the West Indies (UWI) FC failed to move closer to the top two after they were held to a 1-1 draw by promoted Cavalier at the Stadium East field.

Anthony Greenland handed UWI FC a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute, but Cavalier pulled level from the penalty spot through Nickoy Christian on the stroke of half time.

UWI FC now moved to 15 points to remain two behind Portmore United and four adrift of leaders Arnett Gardens; while Cavalier moved up a spot to sixth with 12 points.

Over at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, Tivoli Gardens secured the day's biggest victory by beating Humble Lion 2-0.

Howard Morris (57th minute) and Colorado Murray (75th minutes) scored the goals for Tivoli Gardens, which climbed a place to fourth to join third-placed UWI FC on 15 points.

Over at Frome, the promoted Sandals South Coast secured their first victory in top flight football when they beat Boys' Town 1-0 in a bottom-of-the-table fixture.

Obrian Bent scored the lone goal of the contest, three minutes into added time, as Sandals South Coast joined Boys' Town in six points from nine matches.

Sandals South Coast, which have lost five of there nine matches, remained bottom of the 12-team table. Boys' Town stayed second-from-the-bottom as a result of a better goal difference.

In the day's other game, former champions Montego Bay United denied coach Donovan Duckie a successful return to struggling Waterhouse with a 1-0 victory.

Dino Williams handed Montego Bay United the goal in the sixth minute, which allowed the team to climb a spot to eighth place with 11 points, five clear of the relegation zone.

The defeat kept Waterhouse in 10th place on seven points, just a point above the relegation zone.
