This year's Reggae Marathon takes place on December 8 in Negril, Jamaica

It’s almost that time of year again when the streets of Negril will be alive with the sound of eager runners and reggae beats for the 19th annual Reggae Marathon.

The anticipated race is on Sunday, December 8 this year and will see participants from all over the world flock to Jamaica's south coast for one of the most unique marathons on the international calendar.

And as the countdown to start time gets well and truly underway, Loop has put together a list of everything you need to know - whether you're a marathon pro, an up-and-coming runner or merely a beginner.

The facts:

Despite its name, the Reggae Marathon is actually a marathon, a half marathon and a 10k.

The marathon was started by the Kingston-based Jamdammers running group and the group is still a sponsor - among others.

The finish line beach bash is as anticipated as the race itself.

The marathon is so famous and unique that it's included in the list of the world’s 10 best marathon events. Way to go Jamaica!

The maximum number of participants is 3,000.

The record holders are, for males, Pamenos Ballentyne, St. Vincent, 2001 – 2:21:05. And for females, Ramilia Burangulova, Russia, 2001 – 2:42:25.

Temperatures are usually around 24C in Negril in December so remember to hydrate well.

The course:

The Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K start at Long Bay Beach Park on Negril’s famed 7-mile white sand beach. And it is hard to rival this course for beauty.

The course loops into the town of Negril, then heads north to Bloody Bay and returns to the finish at Long Bay Beach Park. And it's a mostly flat course.

The start and finish are outside Long Bay Beach Park on Norman Manley Boulevard

Start Time is 5:15am and the course remains open for 6 hours. Marathoners MUST reach the halfway mark in 3 hours.

There are aid stations at every mile - 25 in all - multiple cooling stations dotted along the route, reggae beats at every mile to keep you motivated, and lots of medical stations and fully-equipped ambulances.
