There will be a special performance by and tribute to reggae icon Jimmy Cliff at the Independence Grand Gala on Sunday.

In making the announcement on Thursday, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange said the tribute to Jimmy Cliff at the main celebratory event for Jamaica’s 55th anniversary of Independence is a most fitting salute to “a pioneer of the music who brought the beat of Jamaica to the peoples of the world.”

Minister Grange said Jimmy Cliff will be honoured for his “tremendous contribution to the global success of Jamaican music.”

Along with the national salute at the Grand Gala, the St James Municipal Corporation will rename Gloucester Avenue in honour of Jimmy Cliff and present him the Key to the City of Montego Bay.

The Jamaica 55 Independence Grand Gala will take place at the National Stadium on Independence Day, Sunday, 6 August 2017. Gates open at 3 pm.
