Reggae Boyz target Morrison joins Swedish side Ostersunds
Reggae Boyz target former Manchester United midfielder Ravel Morrison has joined Swedish top-flight side Ostersunds FK on a short-term contract.
The 26-year-old, who was under contract with Lazio until the summer but had not played for the Italian club since April 2016, has now signed a deal with Ostersunds FK until the end of June.
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) is hoping that Morrison will be available for the 2019 concacaf Gold Cup in the United States from June 15-July 7.
Morrison, who qualifies to play for the Reggae Boyz through his mother, has now received a Jamaican passport.
Reggae Boyz manager, Roy Simpson, said that there were things Morrison needed to work on before joining the team.
“Ravel has received his passport; there are some issues that he has to be sorting out and he has indicated to us that hopefully at the start of the Gold Cup, he will be ready. So it’s now up to him and his agent to do what they need to do to come on board,” said Simpson.
One of those issues was finding a club and the announcement that he would be joining the Swedish outfit has come as good news for Jamaica.
Morrison's career has been hampered by various off-field problems and he made just three first-team appearances for United and 24 in four years with West Ham, where he had loans with Birmingham, QPR and Cardiff.
Lazio signed Morrison to a four-year contract in 2015 but loaned him to QPR during the 2016-17 season and then Mexican side Atlas in 2017-18, where he scored four goals in 25 games.
Ostersund manager Ian Burchnall said Morrison lacks match fitness but is "convinced" he will be "100% ready" for the start of the 2019 Allsvenskan season on March 31.
