England’s Football Association is defending Raheem Sterling after uproar over his new tattoo of an assault rifle.

The Jamaica-born forward, who will represent England at the World Cup, came under heavy fire earlier this week after he posted a photo of himself during training, sporting a new tattoo of an M16 assault rifle on his right calf.

One anti-gun campaigner demanded that Sterling cover the tattoo or be sacked from the national team.

According to British media reports on Wednesday, the FA is backing Sterling.

"We all support Raheem Sterling and acknowledge the honest and heartfelt account he gave via Instagram last night,” the FA is reported to have said in a statement.

"He and the rest of the squad are focused solely on preparing for the forthcoming World Cup."

Following the backlash, the Manchester City forward took to Instagram on Monday to explain there was a ‘deeper meaning’ behind the tattoo.

Sterling, 23, spent his early years in the inner-city community of Marverly in St Andrew before emigrating to England with his mother at age five.

After scoring 18 goals to help Manchester City win the Premier League title, he is expected to be one of England's key players at the World Cup.
