Portmore United have advanced to the 2018 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinals after defeating Santos de Guapiles of Costa Rica 7-6 in a penalty shootout in their Round of 16 second leg tie at the National Stadium in Kingston on Thursday night.

Penalties were used to decide the winner after Santos de Guapiles won the second leg game 2-1, which ensured that the two teams finished tied 3-3 on aggregate. The Jamaicans had won the first leg 2-1 last week in Costa Rica.

Ronaldo Dinolis gave the visitors the start they wanted in the 29th minute when he redirected a header into net to hand Santos a 1-0 lead in the match and level the aggregate 2-2.

Things got better for the Costa Ricans in the 41st minute and they took a 3-2 lead in the series when Bryan Lopez pounced on a loose ball and scored.

Portmore United would answer though and level the tie 3-3, as Maalique Foster scored on the brink of halftime by firing in a shot after a scramble in the box.

Neither team could find a winner in the second half, so things were decided from the penalty spot where Portmore United proved superior.

Portmore United will face Honduran side Motagua in the quarterfinals.
