The Point Hill Health Centre in St Catherine is to be renamed in honour of the late Dr Kenneth Baugh.
The announcement was made by Minister with Responsibility for Information, Karl Samuda at a post cabinet press briefing on Wednesday morning.
Dr Baugh, who passed away on September 1, spent a brief stint as Opposition Leader and also served as Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister, Minister of Health, as well as Chairman and General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party.
The health centre is located in West Central St Catherine, a constituency where Baugh served as Member of Parliament. Samuda said the centre was temporarily relocated to the Point Hill Community Centre to facilitate the construction of a new health centre funded by the National Health Fund at a cost of $29 million.
“Dr Baugh made significant contributions to the Jamaican health sector as a surgeon at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, as Minister of Health from 1980 to1989 and as opposition spokesman on health. He led significant reforms, including the eradication of polio and the expansion of the programme of immunisation,” Samuda said.
