People's National Party president Dr Peter Phillips (right) offers his condolences to Councillor Kari Douglas over the passing of her father, former Cabinet minister Easton Douglas, while PNP General Secretary Julian Robinson looks on.

A condolence book was opened on Friday at the People's National Party (PNP) headquarters in St Andrew for former Cabinet minister and PNP vice president, Easton Douglas.

PNP president Dr Peter Phillips signed the book on Friday morning. He was joined by PNP general secretary Julian Robinson and other party members.

Meanwhile, Douglas' daughter, Councillor for the Trafalgar Division in South East St Andrew, Kari Douglas, has thanked well wishers for what she said has been "an overwhelming show of support" since her father's passing on Sunday. Easton Douglas, who was 81, died at his St Andrew home after a long battle with cancer.

Councillor Douglas said she was particularly heartened by the kind words from many cross-sections of Jamaica, including across the political aisle, private sector and media.

"Special thanks to all, including Prime Minister Andrew Holness, former Prime Ministers Patterson and Simpson Miller, along with Opposition Leader Dr Peter Phillips and PNP General Secretary, Julian Robinson, who have offered touching tributes," Kari Douglas said in a news release.

Councillor Douglas said she remembers her father not only as her chief advisor and a man who at all times offered the best paternal support possible but also as a trail blazer, nationalist, pioneer and a public servant who was always deeply committed to advancing the development of Jamaica.

A 'nine night' for Easton Douglas will be held at the PNP HQ on Monday, September 3, 2018, beginning at 8:30 in the evening. The public will be advised of funeral arrangements when they are confirmed, the release said.
