Placard-bearing residents of Mountain View call for peace amid an upsurge of violence in the area.

Residents of Mountain View in St Andrew used boards, barrels, rocks and other debris to mount roadblocks in the area on Boxing Day in protest against an upsurge of violence in the area.

An ongoing feud between rival gangs in the area has left a number of people dead and injured in recent weeks. The latest incident was on Christmas Day, when a man and a woman were shot and injured while standing at a bus stop.

On Tuesday, placard-bearing residents took to the streets and pleaded for peace in the area, while mounting roadblocks to get the attention of the authorities.

Traffic had to be diverted from the roadway between Deanery and Saunders avenues in the area as a result of the protest.

There is now a heavy police presence in the area.

In the shooting incident on Tuesday, the victims were standing at the bus stop when they were pounced upon by four gunmen who opened fire, hitting them. They were rushed to the hospital and admitted.
