A sombre atmosphere engulfed the Bedward Gardens Seventh-Day Adventist Church in St Andrew on Sunday as family and friends gathered for the thanksgiving service for the life of 13-year-old Shanoya Wray.

Tears flowed constantly throughout the service, which had a life-sized cut-out of Shanoya, whose skeletal remains were found in a bathtub with toxic substance at a property on Whalley Close in Mona, St Andrew on July 20.

The cut-out was used to symbolise Shanoya, as all that was left of the young girl were just some of her bones when a neighbour went to the premises to investigate the source of a foul odour, and made the gruesome discovery.

The neighbour immediately alerted the police.

The heartbreaking service was attended by Shanoya’s schoolmates from New Day All-Age School, as well as representatives from children’s advocacy group, Hear The Children’s Cry, including founder, Betty-Ann Blaine.

Shanoya’s mother, Shana-Hay Hall had to be consoled as she broke down while reading a lesson, while her father, Starkey was so overcome with emotions that he failed to heed the call to give the remembrance.

Trinidadian teacher, 27-year-old Sanjay Maharaj, has been charged with the murder of Shanoya, while 19-year-old Lenardo Madden, who was found at the premises where the remains were discovered, has been charged with accessory after the fact.

Both are expected to return to court on Monday after being remanded in custody in August.

Maharaj was already before the Home Circuit Court, accused of having had sex with underage Shanoya.
