Phillips to make his budget presentation on Thursday
Dr Peter Phillips
Opposition Leader, Dr Peter Phillips, is to make his contribution to the 2019-2020 Budget Debate on Thursday.
A former National Security Minister, Phillips is expected to use his presentation to speak on, among other national issues, the crime factor, especially with murders heavily on the national agenda at present.
He will likely reiterate the Opposition’s stance on pulling its support from the three states of emergency (SOEs) that were imposed by the Andrew Holness Administration in 2018, to combat the country’s crime problem.
The SOEs were credited by the security forces for a 21 per cent reduction in murders in 2018, and the Opposition has taken much flak for withdrawing its support. Opinion polls showed that a significant majority of Jamaicans favour the crime-fighting measure.
Meanwhile, with the Government stained with the Petrojam scandal which has led to at least eight high-profile resignations or firings, including that of former Energy Minister, Dr Andrew Wheatley, the Opposition leader is also expected to speak to the issue of public corruption.
Dr Phillips has previously described the overall Petrojam developments as the "mother of all scandals".
