Over J$4 billion worth of illicit drugs seized in 2016

The Constabulary Communication Unit said in a release that approximately 1,027 kilograms of cocaine valued at US $9.75 million; 28,173 kilograms of marijuana valued at J$3.09 billion; and 3.7 kilograms of hashish were seized by the Narcotic Division, led by Senior Superintendent McArthur Sutherland.

Along with the illicit drugs, the team also seized 19 illegal firearms and 1, 449 rounds of ammunition.

“The success of the team continued with 344 persons being detained. When broken down the figures reflect 271 males and 73-females who have been arrested for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) and the Firearms Act,” the CCU release said.

“The Division is committed to its mandate and will be relentless in effectively identifying, monitoring, investigating and bringing drug traffickers before the courts with cogent evidence aimed at ensuring successful convictions and forfeiture of tainted assets,” the release quoted Sutherland.

Sutherland said daily operations are conducted at both the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and the Sangster International Airport, in Montego Bay, St James, which have been fruitful.

“Do not smuggle drugs, you will be caught,” he exclaimed.
