Orpheus a five-star banker in King’s Plate
Leading trainer Anthony Nunes’ ORPHEUS is the ante-post favourite for Wednesday’s 1500-metre King’s Plate at Caymanas Park, an open allowance event, which has attracted seven starters.
Among ORPHEUS six rivals are recent winner ANOTHER BULLET and PERFECT NEIGHBOUR, who is down in class from grade one but reporting off a near seven-month lay-up
ORPHEUS, however, is back to form, clocking 1:24.0 for 1400 metres in his last race, the fastest time at the distance since United States-bred CHOO CHOO BLUE won the grade one Gold Cup last October in 1:23.4.
ORPHEUS was sidelined with injury for more than a year after being awarded the 2016 Jamaica Derby in the stewards’ room and breaking down on the lead in the St Leger three weeks later.
The five-year-old has regained form since returning at the back end of last season and will run with regular rider Shane Ellis aboard.
ANOTHER BULLET and eight-year-old PERFECT NEIGHBOUR are both class horses but neither are suited to the distance. PERFECT NEIGHBOUR is reporting off a lay-up and might find the trip too sharp whereas ANOTHER BULLET would have preferred going a furlong shorter.
The King’s Plate is the sixth of nine events scheduled on the midweek card, set to run off at 3:45 p.m. First post is 1:00 p.m.
