Heavy smoke seen in the skies from the Boulevard Shopping Centre area quite some distance from the Riverton landfill, on Wednesday.

Officials at the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) say they expect to eliminate the smoke emission from the Riverton landfill by the end of Thursday.

Reports are that on Wednesday, fire triggered by spontaneous combustion broke out at the facility.

Executive Director of the NSWMA, Audley Gordon, told Loop News on Thursday that a team from the authority, along with firefighter, have since responded and have been working to bring the situation under control.

"The fire has been contained. The issue now is the smoke emission, which we are now using the covering process to address," said Gordon.

He said approximately three quarters an acre of the landfill was affected by the blaze.
