Ann Marie Vaz looked calm and collected as she stepped up to the Port Antonio courthouse to secure her nomination as candidate for the vacant East Portland constituency.

Accompanied by Prime Minister Andrew Holness and other Jamaica Labour Party power brokers, Vaz spoke of the historic moment that was recorded.

"I am happy for all women today. This is the first that a woman has been nominated for any political party in East Portland," she said.

Moments before, she was kissed squarely on the lips by her husband Daryl.

She paid her nomination fee with three $5,000 notes which bear the image of former JLP Leader and Prime Minister, Hugh Shearer.

The date of the by-election has been set for April 4.
