Niko Chromatic hospitalised due to kidney complications
Dancehall selector Niko Chromatic, a member of the popular Chromatic sound system who is battling renal failure, has been hospitalised after suffering complications associated with the illness.
Niko's girlfriend, Kimberly Mais told Loop News that the entertainer was taken to the University Hospital of the West Indies for routine dialysis on Tuesday, when a blocked catheter was discovered. As a result, an emergency surgery was required, but the operation wasn’t conducted until more than 12 hours after, she said.
Mais explained that Niko lost a lot of blood, which she charged was due to “improper handling of the procedure”.
Mais, however, remains hopeful over Niko’s recovery.
“I am hopeful,” Mais told Loop News. “Everything is in God’s hand; he has been keeping him (Niko) thus far, and I pray profusely.”
She said Niko too was optimistic, but shared that the couple’s 10-year-old daughter has not been taking her father’s illness well.
“She is distraught,” Mais said, noting that, with the new school year set to start next week, the situation could not have come at a worse time for the little girl.
Nicholas “Niko” Grant announced last August that he was battling kidney disease. A medical fund via Gofundme was set up for the entertainer in an effort towards raising US$50,000 for surgery, but to date just over US$20,000, less than 50 per cent, has been raised.
The fund is still open for those who are interested in contributing.
In the meantime, Mais thanked members of the local entertainment fraternity including Sean Paul, Chronixx, Konshens and Justus, among others, who have provided support for Niko’s cause.
Still, she expressed disappointment with some of Niko’s colleagues who she said have largely been absent at a time when he needed them most, including members of his own sound system.
“For persons who were in his circle like Chromatic, and Popcaan, I was expecting some support,” she said, noting that Heavy D is the “only Chromatic member who willingly assists and checks up on Nicholas.”
