National Security Minister, Dr Horace Chang, has announced that a division of the Jamaica National Service Corps (JNSC) is to be established in western Jamaica later this year.
He argued that the unattached youth population island-wide now stands at well over 100,000, and said the JNSC will provide a more viable option for this group, instead of them becoming candidates for gang recruitment.
"We will expand our footprint in the region during the course of this year as we seek a division of the Jamaica National Service Corps to this area, and ensure that they offer young men and women alternatives to being recruited by the gangs," Chang stated.
He announced that some 640 of the 2,076 youth who have been engaged in the JNSC training since it was established in 2017, have gone on to enlist in the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).
Chang was speaking at the JDF’s official opening of its new Burke Barracks in Providence, Montego Bay, St James last week.
