Murder accused chopped to death by mob in Portland
A man from Portland, who had been on the run for more than a week after allegedly committing a murder, died at a hospital on Saturday night after being attacked and severely chopped by an angry mob in the parish.
Dead is 55-year-old Baldwin Walsh, who allegedly chopped his nephew, Robert Douglas, to death with a machete almost two weeks ago.
Reports were that the police were called by residents of a community in the parish shortly after 7:00 pm on Saturday, because a man was being beaten and chopped by an angry mob.
The police responded quickly and managed to rescue the man, but after the mob had inflicted several chop wounds all over his body.
The man, who turned out to be Walsh, later died at the Port Antonio Hospital while being treated for his injuries.
The police, who had themselves advised Walsh to turn himself in after the death of his nephew, are now investigating the case of mob justice that is on their hands.
Indications are that while some residents are comfortable with the overall outcome of the matter, others, along with the police hierarchy in the parish, are disturbed about the outcome of the effort to bring justice to Walsh’s alleged crime.
