More specialist nurses expected to migrate soon

The already challenged public health sector is set for more headache over the coming weeks, as a group of recruiters is seeking to hire another set of local nurses to work in the United States.

The move is expected to worsen the shortage of nurses in the local public health system, resulting in even more acutely understaffed critical care units, from where the recruits are normally taken.

Medpro Healthcare Staffing, the recruiting agency, is scheduled to have a seminar next week in St Andrew as part of its hiring thrust.

Indications are that more than 100 nurses left the island since last year, and there has been no clear word about any short-term measures to be put in place to reduce the impact of the continued exodus of specialist nurses from the local shores.
