More Sentence Reduction Days coming up

Accused persons in the parishes of St Ann, St James, St Elizabeth and St Thomas are set to benefit from reduced sentences if they plead guilty on upcoming Sentence Reduction Days which have been announced for the four parishes.

The special days are to start this month.

The first will be on Friday, February 9, in the St Ann Circuit Court, followed by the Elizabeth Circuit Court on Friday, March 9.

The St James and St Thomas Circuit courts and the Western Regional Gun Court are scheduled to have a Sentence Reduction Day on Friday, March 16.

On the special days, accused persons can plead guilty and become eligible for up to a 50 per cent discount on the prescribed punishments for the respective offences.

Sentence Reduction Day, which is new in Jamaica, has been heavily criticised by some persons within the society because of the level of reduction of the sentences, and the emotions surrounding certain cases.

But former Chief Justice, Zaila McCalla, and Director of Public Prosecutions, Paula Llewellyn, have both defended the new initiative within the justice system.
