MoBay mayor blames business community for city’s rat problem

Montego Bay Mayor, Homer Davis, has lashed out at irresponsible business operators who he blames for causing rat infestation in the resort city because of improper commercial waste disposal.

"When you dispose of your waste in a way in which it contains leftover goods (food), what you expect?" questioned the mayor.

He was particularly harsh on jerk meat vendors, who he accused of discarding leftover food in manholes.

Davis was speaking at the monthly meeting of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) in Montego Bay, St James on Wednesday.

He called on President of the MBCCI, Winston Lawson, to encourage the members of the chamber to practise proper solid waste disposal.

"Our disposal of garbage is not being done in the best way. The restaurants are disposing of their leftover food in a way in which it creates that infestation. And so, I am making this appeal through you, Mr President," Davis said.
