Minister Grange announces $10m sponsorship for Primary Championships

Sports Minister Olivia Grange has announced that $10 million will be invested into the 38th INSPORTS Primary School Athletics Championships, which is scheduled for May 9-12 at the National Stadium.

Minister Grange made the announcement during the launch of the 2018 championships at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Thursday.

Eighty-nine schools will compete this year and those institutions will benefit from 400 pairs of spikes.

More than  $1 million in medals, trophies and prize money have been allocated for this year’s top performing teams. The winning school will receive $200,000, with second-place receiving $150,000, third-place $100,000, while the teams finishing between fourth and 10th will each get  $50,000.

Minister Grange said that  “the championship has proven to be a very important development arena for many athletes such as World and Olympic 100m gold medallist Shelly- Ann Fraser-Pryce; Olympic and World 400m hurdles champion Melanie Walker and  Javon Francis."

Minister Grange further said that “the importance of these meets cannot be overstated. We as a country must ensure that the requisite facilities and resources are allocated to them.

“I am urging Jamaicans to lend support to the meet and to come out to see the wonderful performances that we know these youngsters are capable of."

The championship starts 9:00 am each day with defending champions Naggo's Head aiming for a ninth title.
