Mechanic suspected to have committed suicide on hospital compound

The police are probing a suspected suicide involving a mechanic on the compound of the St Ann's Bay Regional Hospital on Friday.

The mechanic's death has brought the number of reported suicides across the island to approximately seven since the start of the year.

The deceased man has been identified as 53-year-old Lenworth Smith of Retreat district in Claremont, St Ann.

According to police reports, passers-by stumbled on his body at about 2:30 p.m. and alerted them.

Upon the arrival of police personnel, Smith's body was seen lying on the ground under a tree with marks around his neck on the hospital compound.

A belt was also seen hanging from one of the branches of the tree.

The scene was processed and the body removed to the morgue.
