MANNING CUP: St Catherine, XLCR, Mona, Hydel confirm 2nd round spots

Four more schools secured their spots in the second round of the 2018 ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup football competition on Match Day 19 on Monday.
Those schools are Mona High (Group B), St Catherine High and Excelsior (Group E) and Hydel High (Group F) and they bring to 12 the number of teams, which have secured spots. Sixteen teams will contest the second round.
The other schools are St George's College (Group A), Kingston College (Group B), Camperdown High and Charlie Smith High (Group C), Denham Town High (Group D), Jamaica College (Group F), Wolmer's Boys and Holy Trinity High (Group G).
At the conclusion of the home-and-away preliminary round, the first two teams in each of the seven groups will advance to the next round. The best third place team/next best third place teams will also qualify for the next round. Those two places will be determined by the number of points earned divided by the number of matches played.
Mona High confirmed their spot with a 3-1 home victory over Dunoon Technical and as a result joined Kingston College (KC) as the automatic qualifiers from Group B.
With one set of matches remaining in the group, Mona High moved to 22 points from nine game, five points behind leaders and group winners KC, which stretched their perfect win record to nine straight games following a 5-0 victory at Ardenne High.
St Catherine High and Excelsior High secured the two automatic qualifying spots from Group E with victories.
St Catherine High scored a 4-0 home victory over Penwood High, while Excelsior High edged Haile Selassie High 1-0 in an away game. Both teams are on 21 points going into the last set of games in the group with St Catherine High leading by goal difference.
Hydel High joined JC as the automatic qualifiers from Group F with a 4-0 home victory over Campion College.
JC, which had already qualified going into the day, were stunned 2-1 at home by Kingston Technical High School, their first defeat of the season.
Hydel and JC will enter their final match in the preliminary round locked on 22 points, but the defending champions are leading the group by goal difference.
