Man who mowed down senior cop, slapped with 16 months prison sentence

The man who in 2016 mowed down a police inspector, who was carrying out duties in the parish of Trelawny, has been sentenced to a year and four months in prison.

The driver, Andrew Brown was sentenced in the Trelawny Circuit Court on Friday this is after he pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter. 

It is reported that Inspector Mark Gibbs was conducting a routine police check when he was hit by a motor car driven by Brown.

Inspector Gibbs was taken to the Falmouth Public General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Reports were made that Brown, who is also a resident in the mentioned parish, fled the scene following the incident but turned in himself to the police the following day.

Inspector Gibbs was head of the Clark's Town Police station at the time.

News of  Gibbs' death, a 30-year veteran in the police force, sent shock waves across the island.
