Man shot dead during 'gun battle' with cops in Westmoreland

A man was shot and killed during a reported gun battle with the police in Negril, Westmoreland on Saturday.

The police have identified the dead man as Shempo Beck of a Westmoreland address.

Reports are that about 6:00 a.m., the police went on an operation in Whitehall, Negril when they were greeted with gunfire upon approaching a house in the area.

The police reported that they took evasive action and returned the fire after which Beck was found suffering from gunshot wounds.

The injured man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Following the shooting the police said they recovered a firearm.

The Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) has been called in to probe the fatal shooting.

Police say they have stepped up their presence in Westmoreland and surrounding areas  following a number of multiple killings the latest of which involved seven people.

The seven people including a two year old baby were shot and killed as gunmen went amok in separate incidents in the Grange Hill area of the parish earlier in the month.            

The deceased, all of Grange Hill, Westmoreland are: 21-year-old Nicoy Myers of New Town; Odane Drummond; Nadine Rowe and her 11- year-old son, Nicoy Bourne; Sheldon Morgan Snr and his 2 year-old child, Sheldon Morgan Jr; and 22-year-old unemployed Tristan Brown.
