Man cornered and cut down by cops in fiery exchange in Montego Bay

A chance encounter between a criminal suspect and members of a police team on Harbour Street in the heart of Montego Bay, St James, led to a gun battle which ended with the man dead on Wednesday afternoon.
Dead is 20-year-old Ricky Murdock, otherwise called ‘Rick’, while a 9mm pistol and a magazine containing three 9mm rounds of ammunition were reportedly seized.
Interestingly, the incident was reportedly witnessed by both locals and tourists in the resort city, who had to dash for cover during the gunfight.
Reports from the Montego Bay police were that about 5:15 p.m., a police team approached Murdock, who had been charged for robbery and was a suspect in relation to several other crimes within the parish.
It is said that on the approach of the police, Murdock pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at the officers before seeking to make an escape on foot.
But other police personnel, who were part of a joint patrol, blocked his path and were also reportedly fired on.
Murdock was eventually shot and the firearm seized.
He was pronounced dead at hospital.
The incident has been reported to both the Inspectorate of the Constabulary (IOC) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
