Licensed firearm holder killed in Westmoreland home invasion
Westmoreland police are probing the fatal shooting of a licensed firearm holder at his home in the parish on New Year's Day.
The deceased has been identified as 48-year-old hardware supervisor, Anthony Meyler, of Rocky Hill, Sheffield. Another man was shot and injured in the incident.
Reports are that Meyler was hosting a family gathering at his home when gunmen pounced upon the group and opened fire, hitting Meyler and the other man.
The police were summoned and, upon their arrival, Meyler was reportedly seen lying on his back on the ground suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds to his upper body.
He was rushed to the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The other victim later turned up at the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to his right arm. He was treated and admitted in a stable condition.
It is suspected that Meyler's 9mm Heckler and Koch pistol was stolen in the incident.
There were 142 recorded murders in Westmoreland last year, six shy of the 148 recorded in 2017.
