Let’s Talk About: Is it OK for men to wash their partners' underwear?

A man was recently found guilty of malicious destruction of property in a St Andrew court after he destroyed a line with his sister’s washed clothes, because he felt that his sibling’s under garments were too close to his rags.

It brought attention to a view held by many Jamaican men that it’s a ‘sin’ - that must not be committed unless in extenuating circumstances - for males to wash or mingle with women’s underwear.

The stance has been immortalised in the dancehall including a song by Elephant Man entitled ‘Bad Man’, which has a chorus that goes, ‘Bad man don’t bathe/Wid dem baby modda rag/Bad man dweet hard/Mek she guh round guh brag/ Shotta clothes don’t wash/Wid gal underwear/Shotta yute don’t play/Certain games out there.

But, with Jamaicans taking a more liberal view towards some issues, are local males more open to the idea of washing their partner’s underwear? Loop News took to the streets of Half-Way-Tree and downtown Kingston to find out in the latest edition of Let’s Talk About.
