“Businesses across the Caribbean need to see themselves as co-authors of the digital age and not solely consume technologies if they are to be true beneficiaries.”

That’s the message President and Chief Executive Officer of Digita Global Marketing Ltd Kemal Brown delivered to a summit of business leaders at conference in Portugal earlier this month.

Speaking at the Horasis Global Meeting in Cascais at a session with the theme “Leading Into The Digital Future”, Brown said a critical challenge for the Caribbean was that in many cases digital transformation was being passively experienced versus actively shaped.

“Digital tools, platforms and data have changed the way we mobilise, socialise and monetise,” he said. “The business use cases for digital technology have been proven and it is just the beginning when we consider the Internet of Things and a fully connected world, from cars to clothing.”

“Marketing is one area seeing dramatic shifts through the use of data-driven internet platforms, websites, e-commerce, social media, applications and smart devices,” he continued.

“If you’re a CEO, you also need to be a CDO (Chief Data Officer) because the currency of the future is data and the insights it delivers will drive business results. If you are out of the loop, your competitiveness will suffer, as will your profits.”

Brown hopes that Caribbean nations, especially Jamaica, find innovative ways of leveraging data and digital technologies to transform the business landscape and globalise businesses so they have the same reach as Jamaican culture.

“Whenever I attend global meetings, everyone I meet speaks about Jamaica’s beauty, never our business. We have to change that. Digital enhances customer insights and reduces inefficiencies, which automatically improves business results.”

He will be sharing this vision for a Digital Caribbean at the Jamaica Employers Federation annual conference set for early August.

The 2018 Horasis Global Meeting, held from 5 - 8 May 2018, sought to advance solutions to the most critical challenges facing corporations today.
