Kingston College's (KC) Wayne Pinnock easily dismantled the Boys' Under-20 long jump championship record at the Digicel Grand Prix Finale, GC Foster Classics, on Saturday at the National Stadium and is now looking towards the March 20-24 Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships.

Pinnock, a first year Class One athlete, leapt 7.99 metres to beat the Digicel Grand Prix old mark of 7.79 metres, which was set by Carey McLeod, also of KC.

Pinnock's new standard is better than the 7.87-metre Champs' record set in 1993 by Vere Technical's Leon Gordon.

He said, "I think it was a great performance by me. It is a great feeling that I broke the record. I just went out there and do what I am supposed to do and I got the winning jump on the second attempt."

"I definitely could have done better as I think that jump can be improved, but will have to work some more on my technique, as  I am having some difficulties with my landing feet."

It was a one-two finish for KC on Saturday as Shacquille Lowe cut the sand with a mark of 7.35 metres for second, with third going to Daniel Bogle of Wolmer's Boys with 7.25 metres.

Pinnock believes that his teammate Lowe and Bogle will again be his main rivals when they compete at Champs.

Last year, at Champs, an injury forced Pinnock out of the Class Two long jump final. He was on his final jump approach, when he dropped to the turf, writhing in pain. He was carted off to the medical area under the McDonald tunnel, where he was diagnosed with a hip pointer injury.
