Karl Samuda is the new Leader of Government Business in the House
Created : 27 March 2018
Veteran Member of Parliament, Karl Samuda, was on Tuesday named the new Leader of Government Business in the House of Representatives.
He takes over from Derrick Smith who resigned as Member of Parliament for the St Andrew North West constituency in January. South West St Catherine Member of Parliament, Everald Warmington, had been acting as Leader of Government Business since that time. However, the parliamentary opposition had expressed concern, noting that the position of Leader of Government Business is usually held by a Cabinet minister. Warmington is a Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister.
Leader of Opposition Business, Phillip Paulwell, has welcomed Samuda to the position, stating that he is looking forward to working with him.
On Monday, Samuda was stripped of his position as Minister of industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries. He will now serve as Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation which operates out of the Office of the Prime Minister.
