Children in East Rural St Andrew enjoyed a one-day football tournament courtesy of Joanna Webley, the daughter of the People's National Party caretaker candidate for the area, Joan Gordon-Webley.

The football tournament in Harbour View on Saturday saw the mostly underprivileged children grouped by age, representing the different local government divisions where they reside. They were treated to meals and snacks throughout the day.

According to the younger Webley, the aim of the event - dubbed the East Rural St Andrew Youth Development Football Tournament - was to teach the children about team camaraderie while also getting them more involved in the sport.

"It's just to get the kids out doing something and also make them learn about team spirit... and love," she said.

She told Loop News that the children were first introduced to an agility programme in January, before engaging in divisional weekly matches. She said approximately 350 children were involved in the project, with volunteer coaches guiding the process.

According to Webley, the programme will continue after the football tournament is over, with organisers providing other holistic events for the children to participate in.
