The St Catherine Municipal Corporation has so far not moved to take any action against Councillor for the Bog Walk Division, the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Peter Abrahams, who has been charged with negligent use of a firearm.

The police laid the charges against Abrahams last Wednesday.

He was arrested and charged with breaching the Firearms Act after his licensed firearm was seized by the police on Tuesday morning during a spot check on the Bog Walk main road.

The gun was reportedly discovered in a car in which four men were travelling.

Despite the charge, Abrahams attended last Thursday’s meeting of the corporation.

It is not known what, if any, action can be taken against him while he has the charge hanging over his head.

The Opposition People’s National Party has a one-seat majority in the 41-seat corporation. However, the JLP is presently down to 19 seats following the death Councillor for the Homestead Division, Owen Palmer, in a road collision in March.

A by-election is scheduled for May 18 to fill the seat.
