Japanese designer wins Project Runway Season 16
Japanese designer Kentaro Kameyama is the winner of Season 16 of Project Runway.
Kentaro won the show on Thursday night, surprising many viewers who were in favour of either Brandon Kee or Ayana Ife.
Ayana, the daughter of Trinidadian parents, looked like she had a chance when Brandon was eliminated after the runway finale at New York Fashion Week. The fourth contestant Margarita Alvarez was the first to be eliminated.
Ayana’s collection was called “Evolution”, a documentation of her own journey overcoming the odds. With this collection featuring soft silks, distressed denim and floral prints, she sealed her niche as a modest-wear designer utilising different styles of hijabs. While the judges weren't impressed with her first three looks they found that the collection grew in beauty as it went along. Her last dress, an ethereal wedding dress in lime green, took their breaths away.
Nina Garcia said that Ife continued to surprise and that dress was a look at what she will continue to evolve into.
Ayana's collection, however, was no match for Kentaro's.
His collection, he said, was inspired by Japanese culture and the models walked to the music he composed specifically for the presentation.
Despite his concerns before that, his collection was not cohesive, it turned out to be complete, fun, flirty and simply beautiful transitioning from white and black garments to vibrant reds.
