Jamaica has chronic mental health challenge - Tufton

Minister of Health Dr Christopher Tufton says he will be using available data to address a major mental health problem plaguing Jamaica.

He revealed that a mental health and homeless report produced damning revelation which indicated that some 30 percent of the local population experience some level of mental illness.

He added that of that number, 70 percent shy away from revealing their mental challenges to their psychiatrists, compounding the problem.

The health minister disclosed that in a bid to address the nation's mental health challenges, he will be putting resources, supported by data together to devise a plan.

He was speaking at the annual conference of the Psychiatric Nursing Aide of Jamaica at the Iberostar Hotel in Montego Bay on Thursday.
