High-profile probes into back-to-back rapes in St Bess
A series of high-profile police investigations are now under way in St Elizabeth where two women, a 19-year-old and a 60-year-old, were raped in separate incidents within the last two days.
The police reported that in the first incident on Tuesday, the 19-year-old was on her way from work when, as she reached her home, she was attacked by a man with a machete and was subsequently sexually assaulted.
That incident occurred about 11.30 pm in Nain in the parish.
Investigators on that case are trying to establish if the man was lying in wait for the female in or around her home.
As residents were still trying to come to terms with that shocking incident in a normally quiet community, news came within a day of another brutal attack against another female in the parish, this time a 60-year-old in the Maggoty area.
Reports are that about midnight on Wednesday, the elderly woman was asleep at home when criminal(s) broke into the house and sexually assaulted her, then escaped.
The police have since launched a series of investigations into the matters and are calling on residents, especially where single females are living, to be more vigilant about their safety and be more aware of their surroundings.
Police sources said for females who have to travel home at night, steps should be taken to put in place more security around them.
The police also encouraged citizens to open up lines of communication with their neighbours.
