Prime Minister Andrew Holness has described the late Louise Bennett-Coverley as an individual who was the perfect ambassador for Jamaica and a global icon who carried the local dialect worldwide.

Holness made the comment as he unveiled a statue of the cultural icon who was affectionately called ‘Miss Lou’, in Gordon Town, St Andrew last Friday.

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, had said the installation of the statue is part of the Government’s plan to establish Miss Lou Square in Gordon Town, as a fitting and lasting tribute to the outstanding woman, the mother of Jamaican culture.

The statue, done by sculptor Basil Watson, was also unveiled on the date that marked the 99th anniversary of the birth of the late icon.

“Last night we paid homage to an outstanding Jamaican, the late Louise Bennett-Coverley, lovingly called ‘Miss Lou’. She was the perfect ambassador for Jamaica, a global icon who carried our local dialect worldwide. What better way to honour her legacy than with this statue,” said Holness, who also posted part of his presentation on his official Twitter page.

“Miss Lou is well-respected, well-loved and revered across the world, (to the point) that I expect that unveiling of her statue in the next few days will immediately position Gordon Town as an attraction in Kingston which promotes community tourism,” Grange said a few days before the event.
