Two firearms and ammunition, including a high-powered rifle, were seized during a police operation in Chinester, Westmoreland on Friday.

Two persons were taken into custody in relation to the seizure.

An M16 assault rifle with ten 5.56 cartridges and a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol containing two cartridges were found and seized along with electronic devices which were suspected to have been used in lottery scamming activities.

A Toyota Avensis motorcar was also seized by the police.

Reports from the Savanna-la-Mar police are that about 5:00 a.m., an operation was carried out, during which a house was searched and the firearms and other items were seized.

The names of the persons who were arrested have been withheld, pending further investigation. They are to be questioned in the presence of their attorneys.

Over 40 illegal guns have been seized in Westmoreland so far this year, as the police intensify their focus on the volume of weapons in the hands of criminals in the parish.
