Delroy Fray, clinical co-ordinator at the Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) in St James, has advised patients against seeking medical attention at the main regional health facility if it is not extremely urgent.

He has instead directed them to seek medical treatment at the Falmouth Public General Hospital in Trelawny, the Noel Holmes Hospital in Hanover, or the Savanna-la-mar Public General Hospital in Westmoreland.

“I would certainly advise patients to seek care at the Falmouth Hospital, Noel Holmes Hospital or Savanna-la-Mar Hospital if they are able to, because, from what I have told you, the services have been constricted to a limited number of beds (at Cornwall Regional)," Dr Fray indicated on Tuesday.

"So, I could not really tell them that they should come here. Come here if you have a real emergency or an urgent case," he elaborated.

Last month, Health Minister, Dr Christopher Tufton, announced that more patients are to be relocated from Cornwall Regional as the Government works to complete a $2 billion restoration project at the hospital where major problems have emerged over time with noxious fumes emitting from an old and poorly maintained ventilation system at the facility

Dr Tufton said facilities at the Falmouth Hospital in Trelawny have been expanded to take in additional patients, and discussions are being held with other medical centres to assist with the workload.

In addition, an operating theatre is to be set up at the Mount Salem Health Centre in Montego Bay, St James by the first week of April, and additional bed space provided.

Dr Tufton said everything is being done to ensure that over the next seven to eight months, most of the challenges at Cornwall Regional will be rectified.

He said the Government is committed to the rehabilitation of the hospital, as it would be impractical to close it.

Cornwall Regional is the only Type A health facility outside of the Corporate Area, and mainly serves the residents of Trelawny, St James, Hanover and parts of Westmoreland.
