Gov’t taking lead in net-zero energy building design

Minister of Local Government Desmond McKenzie
Minister of Local Government Desmond McKenzie says the government is not simply talking about energy-efficiency in building design, it is leading the way.
Addressing the Net Zero Energy Building workshop at the Knutsford Court hotel in Kingston, earlier this week, the minister said environmental efficiency was now a design element in several municipal projects.
“The municipal building in Portmore and in Westmoreland and the infirmaries, including the one in Manchester, which I broke ground for last week, are all based on designs that encompass energy efficiency, rainwater harvesting and other environmentally sensitive inputs,” McKenzie said.
Head of UN Environment’s Sub-Regional Office, Victor Sweeney said energy-efficient building design is an increasingly critical aspect of both urban planning and climate change management.
“Globally, buildings account for about one-third of total energy consumption, and in most countries around the world, are the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions.”
