With virtually the entire Cabinet and the extended political directorate in attendance, led by Prime Minister Andrew Holiness, it is noticeable that Governor General, Sir Patrick Allen, is absent from the glitzy function now on in Moneague, St Ann to name the North-South leg of the Highway 2000 network in honour of former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga.

The governor general was represented by the custos of St Ann at the ceremony, which has drawn political controversy mainly from the Opposition People's National Party (PNP) over the naming of the highway in honour of Seaga, instead of another former Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller.

The PNP has contended that Simpson Miller had much to do with the construction of the highway, while Seaga, they said, actually opposed its construction.

But the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has countered with the position that Seaga, as a national leader, has had profound impact on national developments between Ocho Rios and the Corporate Area, the corridor that the highway spans.

With a PNP declaration that it will likely reverse the decision to name the highway in favour of Seaga whenever it returns to power, the absence of the governor general from the ceremony, which has been boycotted by the PNP, was of even more significance, but the very nationalistically themed function rolls on in earnest at - of all places -the Unity Valley Toll Plaza in Moneague, St Ann.
